Piranhas in the News

YMCA Piranha Swim Team Makes a Big Splash at Middle Atlantic Jr. Olympics

The Pocono Family YMCA Piranhas Swim Team took a record 55 swimmers to the Middle Atlantic Jr. Olympics at Penn State University and placed 4th overall out of 65 teams, as well as 4th in both the men's and women's divisions. The Piranhas finished 1st in the men's open division (15 & older) and 2nd in the boy's 10 & under division, and will send 4 individual swimmers to the Eastern Zone Long Course Championships scheduled for August at Penn State. While local YMCA and high school swimmers generally compete in 25 yard pools, USA championship meets are held in longer 50-meter pools. Over the past two months, Coach Mike Wolbert has encouraged his swimmers to attend 'long course' meets across Pennsylvania and New Jersey, and that hard work clearly paid off.

Zachary Wolbert (9) earned the most individual points for the Piranhas, placing 3rd in the 100 meter Fly, 4th in the 200 meter IM & 50m Breast, 5th in the 100m Breast & 50m Fly, 8th-50m Free, 9th-100m Free, 12th-50m Back, and 15th-200m Free. Kamahl Bron (17) placed in 6 events: 7th in the 100m Free, 10th in the 100m Fly & 50m Free, 11th-100m Back, and 12th-100m Fly & 200m IM.

Other multiple place winners were Emily Wolbert (11), who was 5th in the 200m Fly, 10th in the 50m Fly, and 16th in the 50m Breast;  Colin Cruz (15), 14th in the 100m Fly and 15th in the 400m Free & 200m IM; Michael Inglesby (16), 12th-100m Breast and 15th-100m Fly & 50m Free; Stephen Vazquez (17), 12th-100m & 50m Free and 13th-100m Back; Keenan Bartlett (17), 13th-200m Back, 14th-100m Back and 16th-200m IM;  Benjamin Gendelman (13), 10th-200m Fly and 16th-100m Fly; and Katherine Lufty (14), 15th-200m Breast and 16th-100m Breast.

Eleven Piranhas also earned individual points for the team by placing in the top 16 in their age divisions, including Benjamin Dutka (17), whose time finishing 6th in the 50m Free earned him a trip to the Eastern Zone Championships. Alex Burns (13) finished 8th in the 50m Free; Lena Yang (14) was 9th in the 200m Breast; Alex Dunigan (16) 9th-100m Breast; Avanti Banks (16), 10th-100m Fly; Ivan Puskovitch (8), 11th-50m Breast; Janay Parrish (14), 11th-100m Breast; Colin Naturale (10), 12th-100m Breast; Samuel Velez (12). 15th-100m Fly; Alora Cruz (10), 16th-100m Fly; and Matt Pankiewicz (16), 16th-100m Fly.

Probably the most important factor in the success of the team was the outstanding performance of the relays, as the depth of the team enabled Coach Wolbert to enter at least one relay in 21 of 24 events.
