Pocono Piranhas Host YMCA Girls Championship

The Pocono Family YMCA Swim Team, the Piranhas, hosted the Girls 'B' Championship on January 26, 2008, at the Lehman Intermediate School in Bushkill. Over 350 swimmers, age 5-17 years, competed in 43 events in the two sessions. While Lionville, with the greatest number of swimmers, won the most points during the Championship, the Piranhas received their team trophy as winner of the Girls 'B' North Division during the regular season, and set many team and personal records during the meet.

The Pocono Piranhas Girls team swam away with the League Season title with a record of  4-1, and also won the 8&under Division title (4-1), the 9-10 Division (undefeated 5-0), and tied for first in the 13-14 Division (3-2). The Boys team came in second in the league, with second place finishes in all five divisions.

During the Girls Championships, one of the oldest Piranha team records fell, as the 9-10 100 Medley Relay team combined to beat the 1981 record by almost 3 seconds. Emily Cabral, Emily Wolbert, Maggie Palaski and Alexis Kemp won the event with a time of 2:22.36. This relay team had already qualified for the District Championships in March, but their winning time has made them the 3rd fastest 9-10 Medley Relay team in the YMCA National rankings so far this season! The same four swimmers are also ranked 7th in the Freestyle Relay rankings.

Emily Wolbert had a great meet overall, winning the 100IM and the 100-yard Freestyle, and placing second in the 50-yard Breastroke (by .04 seconds). Maggie Palaski took a second in the 50-yard Butterfly. The 13-14 team of Lauren Mezzanotte, Bethay Randall, Avanti Banks, and Lena Yang placed second in both the 200-Yard Medley and 200-Yard Free Relays. In addition, Lena Yang was second in both the 50- & 100-Yard Freestyle.

Also performing well that day were Katharine Lufty in the 11-12 50 Breast and Irene Gendelman in the 25-Yard Backstroke leg of her 9-10 Medley Relay team: both swimmers qualified for Districts in those events.

The Boys 'B' Championship was held hosted by the Lionville YMCA on Sunday, January 27, 2008. Several Piranhas qualified for Districts with their performances at the meet, including Adrian Bernard, 13-14 50 Free and 100 Back, and Sam Velez in the 9-10 50 Free. Zack Wolbert won the 8&under 25-Yard Butterfly and the 50-Yard Freestyle, and tied the 25-Yard Breaststroke. Wolbert's time in the 50 Free was good enough to qualify him to compete in the 9-10 event at District Championships. [The YMCA District Championships do not have an 8&under Division.]

So far this season, eighteen Piranhas have qualified for the YMCA East District competition, which is slated for March 8 & 9, 2008, at LaSalle University:
